These are some my campers from this past summer. Over the summer I was a Unit counselor for Kindergarten though first graders. I could see the effects of them never really having a formal schooling. I saw this will how they interacted together and how they interacted with staff. The relationship I create I foster inside of the camp summer and outside of it. By supporting them in their cookie sales, tournaments, and other actives that they ask me too.
Over the many summers I have worked at Girl Scout camp, a huge part of my job was building campers ' self-confidence. Here, I taught campers to trust themselves in situations that might be unfamiliar to them. I did this by showing them step by step how the activity works and its safety features. Some examples are a child; the child in the first photo was afraid to go ziplining, but after talking to me and learning about it, she watched all her friends go. She got the confidence to trust me and go down. The last photo is of a camper shooting archery for one of her first times. This is frightening to a five-year-old old but as the period went on, she felt more and more comfortable trusting me and herself participating in the activity.
This week, the girls in my unit were working on a badge about the solar system, so they wanted to make the unit a solar system. As you can see, the balloons are the planets, and they made UFOs with little aliens on them. All of my little Kindergarten and first graders wanted to dress up as the planets, including their counselors.
