Why special education
Starting at a young age, I was introduced to special education, which started my wonder about how I could help people with special needs. After learning about special education through personal experience, I have wanted to help. When applying to college, I knew my minor was going to be special education. Throughout my time at Rider, I have fallen in love with learning how to help individuals, whether it is in my classroom or just in the world. I have a desire to teach special education, and my field experience has helped foster this love.
Classroom Experiance
For the 2024-2025 school year, I had the opportunity to be a long-term 3rd-grade special education teacher in a co-taught classroom. With this experience, I learned how to meet students' IEP goals, monitor data, and grow relationships. Being in a special educator's position for this year has helped me understand how to break through with students and build their confidence when they need it the most. Remembering that some of my students do not always get the praise at home, it was something during small group instruction that I focused on to help them grow.
Sample Lessons
Here is a sample lesson plan I created for a high functioning student with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The lesson is about how to run a handwriting program. This is a larger version of the worksheet I made for the student.
This is another sample lesson I created. This one is based on a lower functioning student with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is a lesson to run a matching letters program. Below is the powerpoint I made to create the flashcards for the student.
